Naked Bouncy Egg

This simple chemistry experiment is bursting with fun & learning and only needs two ingredients

This eggsperiment is crazy cool! Its super easy to do and great fun. We also get to use a funky new word  – osmosis! Whose gonna sound like a smarty pants now!

 

What You'll Need

  • 1 Egg
  • Distilled clear vinegar

Equipment

  • Jam Jar/Glass Jar with Lid

How to Do It

  1. 1Place the egg in a glass jar and cover completely with vinegar. You will see tiny bubbles forming on the shell. These bubbles are carbon dioxide gas.
  2. 2Leave the egg in the vinegar for a full 48 hours.
  3. 3Pour off the vinegar and carefully rinse the egg with water. The egg will look translucent because the outside shell is gone! The only thing that remains is the delicate membrane of the egg.
  4. 4Now bounce - measure how high can it bounce or how many times before it bursts.

Science Bites

The shell of an egg is made of calcium carbonate.  When you place the egg into the vinegar, you see bubbles, which is the chemical reaction of the acid in the vinegar reacting with the calcium carbonate to produce carbon dioxide.  You’ll also notice that the egg gets larger as it sits in the vinegar.  That is because some of the vinegar is absorbed in the egg through its semi-permeable membrane!

More Detailed Facts

Vinegar is an acid called acetic acid. Egg shells are made up of calcium carbonate. The vinegar reacts with the calcium carbonate by breaking the chemical into its calcium and carbonate parts. The calcium part floats around in the solution while the carbonate part reacts to form the carbon dioxide bubbles that you see.

Some of the vinegar will pass through the egg’s membrane and cause the egg to get bigger. This is  called osmosis. That’s why the egg is even more delicate if you handle it. If you shake the egg, you can see the yolk sloshing around in the egg white. If the membrane breaks, the egg’s insides will spill out into the vinegar. If you leave the egg out in the air , it will react with the carbon dioxide in the air will cause the egg to harden again.

 

Top Tips

A word of warning:  Patience is the name of the game with this experiment.  Your child will have to wait at least 3 days before getting to “bounce” their egg.

When you go to bounce you egg do it somewhere that is easy to wipe clean.
